Surgical Navigation System for Sinus Surgery

A 30-year-old patient from Indonesia sought treatment at St. Martin De Porres Hospital due to prolonged nasal congestion and frequent, unexplained nosebleeds. Upon examination, it was determined that these symptoms were caused by a sinus tumor located near the eye socket and skull base. To prevent serious complications, Dr. Lu Yen-Ting, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, employed a new-generation 3D navigation system during endoscopic sinus surgery to precisely remove the tumor.

Because the sinuses are located close to the eye orbit and brain, even a slight mistake during surgery could lead to complications such as vision loss or cerebrospinal fluid leakage, which in turn could cause life-threatening conditions like meningitis. Prior to surgery, Dr. Lu conducted a detailed CT scan for accurate planning. During the procedure, he integrated the 3D navigation system, successfully removing the diseased tissue while restoring normal sinus drainage, preserving anatomical structures and functions, and minimizing postoperative adhesions and scarring¡Xsignificantly reducing the risk of recurrence.

Dr. Lu explained that the 3D navigation system clearly displays the intricate anatomy of the sinuses, much like a GPS system in a car. It provides real-time mapping and directional guidance, reducing the risk of surgical disorientation and helping to avoid critical nerves, blood vessels, and other vital structures. The system not only ensures precise targeting of the lesion but also shortens surgery time, reduces intraoperative bleeding, and facilitates quicker patient recovery.

The 3D navigation system has now become an essential tool in minimally invasive sinus surgery. It is particularly valuable in procedures involving recurrent sinusitis, extensive nasal polyposis, and tumor removal within the nasal cavity¡Xespecially when the lesions are located near high-risk areas such as the orbit or skull base.<>
