Hospice Care: Life's Final Journey with Love
On June 5, St. Martin De Porres Hospital specially invited President Chao-Hsun Tsai, Superintendent of National Taiwan University Hospital Jinshan Branch, to deliver a lecture titled "Integration of Spiritual Care Teaching and Practice." The session aimed to share end-of-life care philosophies and practical insights with the medical team. Leveraging his profound clinical expertise, President Tsai guided physicians, nurses, and caregivers in comprehensively addressing the physical, psychological, and spiritual needs of terminally ill patients. He emphasized how to accompany them on their final journey with professionalism and empathy, inspiring attendees to reflect deeply on holistic, patient-centered care.
Prior to the lecture, President Tsai donated a copy of his latest publication to the hospital's library, expressing his hope that the book would serve as a compassionate guide for healthcare professionals in supporting patients and their families, encouraging a warmer perspective on life-and-death issues. Superintendent Mei-Hui Chen accepted the donation on behalf of the hospital and presented a certificate of appreciation, acknowledging President Tsai's dedication to advocating life¡¦s dignity and enriching local healthcare with valuable humanistic insights.
Superintendent Chen noted that Chiayi¡¦s aging population continues to grow, yet many elderly individuals and their families exhibit a cultural reluctance to discuss end-of-life issues. She stressed that frontline medical teams must address patient and family anxieties with nuanced empathy, offering steadfast companionship and support during challenging times.
President Tsai, who also serves as Chairman of the Taiwan Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics, is a nationally recognized leader in hospice, palliative care, and geriatric medicine. His lecture focused on establishing authentic and gentle communication with terminally ill patients and their families, covering psychological support for patients, spiritual care strategies, family dialogue techniques, and interdisciplinary teamwork, earning resounding applause from participants. |
